Hi, Liz,
I have been having computer problems and had to rig something up with my
ancient Mac LCII while my other one is out for repairs. But I wanted to
thank you for asking about me! Like everyone else, things are too busy, but
on the whole, everything is going in the right direction, so how can I
complain?
I thoroughly enjoyed your post about your grandmother -- it brought back
wonderful memories of my own grandmother, Joicy Barrett. She and my
grandfather bought a hot springs resort in CA. when my mom was pregnant
with me, and they initially brought down fabulous chefs from San Francisco
to run the dining room. She was a remarkable cook herself, though neither
she nor my mother enjoyed cooking much. So they started teaching me from
the time I could walk (I was making coffee at the age of 4 1/2, and doing
all the thanksgiving cooking at 13!) When I was in high school, times had
changes and it was impossible to get good chefs, so I did all the cooking
at our resort. And it started with what my grandmother taught me. I
remember in particular that she would rest each afternoon, in a room just
off the kitchen of our cottage, and she would give me directions from her
bed! It was such an effective way to learn that years later I taught my
daughter how to cook the same way -- her in the kitchen, and me on the
couch, giving instructions or just answering questions..."OK, I've mixed
the eggs in, now what?" "let it sit a couple of minutes, and then gently
spoon it into the tins..." (it was fun, and kept me from taking over! LOL).
So, again, thanks for sharing, and I would love a copy, too. You can send
it Claris, Word or in email, but send it to my other if you send it as an
attachment: joicy@clergy.net
Hope all is well with you! Love, Joicy
