GOP LAUNCHES ATTACK ADS:
With less than a week remaining before voters go to the polls across the
nation, the Republican National Committee released three new 30-second
television advertisements today attacking President Clinton, for the first
time in weeks using the president's relationship with Monica Lewinsky.
White House correspondents report that administration officials attacked
the ads as desperate moves, but they were also seen as a last-minute
attempt to rally hard-core Republican voters to the polls.

NEW TRENDS IN CAMPAIGN ADVERTISING:
Very short ads are the newest thing, as short as ten seconds. Candidates'
spouses are appearing in more ads, possibly as a reaction to the Clinton-
Lewinsky scandal. And even though there are still lots of negative ads,
some of them are being lightened with humor.

INCUMBENTS TAKE THE LIONS SHARE IN FUNDRAISING:
Election officials are worried that some money isn't being properly
accounted for.

WOOING BLACK VOTERS:
Blacks have always been a solid part of the Democratic base, and they're
remaining loyal to President Clinton. In one recent survey, blacks gave
the President an 89 percent favorable rating.

URBAN SPRAWL ON THE BALLOT:
Environmental groups like the Sierra Club say low-density suburban growth
is destroying far too much farmland and adding to air and water pollution.
Controversial plans to control urban sprawl are on the ballot in several
states.

BOXER, FONG IN TOUGH CALIFORNIA SENATE BATTLE:
In the close Senate race between Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer and
Republican challenger Matt Fong, both candidates are trying to portray
their opponent as out of touch with California voters.

VOTERS TO DECIDE ON MORE THAN 60 BALLOT INITIATIVES:
On Tuesday, voters in 16 states will consider some 60 initiatives-measures
put on the ballot by citizens. In many cases, contentious social and
political issues will be resolved, including measures on affirmative
action, abortion rights, religious freedom, physician-assisted suicide,
and taxes. The process has strong supporters and opponents and have
generated a sizeable political industry of their own.
