Gail: I remember those days! Norman was the same way. Schnauzers are very active little dogs and really don't begin to mellow out until they're about three. Norman used to sort of shriek and paw at my legs if I even went to get the mail without him -- so I'd carry him out with me. No wonder my father is disgusted with me! He doesn't do that anymore, though. He knows I'll come back now, but it still takes a good five minutes to give me my welcome home kisses. Guido just sort of humps my leg. -- Kathy i n Boise

Hi Kathy, I really wish that I could have a playmate for Pepper. He is only 12 months and full of energy. When I try to check my e-mail he keeps pawing at my arms and barking until I stop and play with him. We are limited to 1 pet in our Modular Home Park. He has fallen in love with the little beagle who lives in back of us and on good days, they chased each other to exhaustion. Unfortunately, the rains have started so play time will be limited to sunny days.

Dear Gail: I can't imagine anyone giving up one of those little fellows -- but their loss was your gain -- right? I don't think there is a smarter dog in the world, but springer spaniels are wonderful dogs, too. Weren't you lucky to have had yours for such a long time? It's funny, but the love and affection I got from Norman helped me feel better. I'd hold him and cry and he'd lick my face and snuggle, and it wouldn't seem so bad. He's so precocious that we have to spell a lot of things, and now he knows what we're spelling! I have pictures of him and Guido at work on my desk. People think I'm weird. We got Guido (the lahsa apso) at the Humane Society for Norman so he'd have someone to play with. Now they're inseparable, but Norman is definitely the alpha dog. Hi Kathy, I have a little black mini schnauzer too. His name is Pepper. I adopted him last April from the humane society. I love him to death. He's a little imp and keeps me moving. He wants to play all day long! When I was ill, I had a beautiful Springer Spaniel named Sunny. He never left my side and he would go crazy if Steve and I were in separate rooms because he couldn't be in two different rooms at once and would bark and scold us. Sadly, we had to put him down two years ago. He was 17 years old and his little body just gave out.

Liz: I don't think it's silly at all to talk about your cat. I have a little black Schnauzer named Norman. He was with me all through my chemo and radiation, and when I was in the hospital for about two weeks in March, he stopped eating. My husband sneaked him into the hospital wrapped in a blanket and the nurse was his accomplice. Norman took a nap with me, and I told him I was going to be all right. He started eating again! After I got home, he never left my side (and doesn't, to this day). He sleeps snuggled up as close to me as he can get -- a little, black ball. I love to listen to him breathe at night -- and sometimes he snores. I also have a lahsa apso named Guido, and three long-haired cats. I love them all. -- Kathy in Boise.

I do recall you telling us about your kitten. Pets are such good company.
We just took in a stray cat about 3 weeks ago (I'm such a softy). She hung
around our deck for a few days, so pathetically thin. Now she seems healthy
and very affectionate. Tried, without luck, to find her owners. We also got
4 goldfish the kids were selling at school a few days ago. Now we have 2
cats, a rabbit, a guinea pig, a hedgehog and 4 goldfish. Do you think I
should learn how to say no? LOL.

P.S. Read the other post about your cat's name. We still call our new cat
"Kitty" because we never really intended to keep her so didn't want to give
her a name. I think "Kitty" is what it will stay.
