Hi,
I would like to share my experience with detecting
colon cancer, where I had no real symptoms.
I am 56 years old and in pretty good health, I
thought. I went to Dr. to check me out after
several weeks of stomach upset and a blah dull
ache in my stomach and eventually some mild lower
right abdominal pain.
I had a blood test and found that my white count
was 29,000 and should be about 1,000. This
pointed out that there something definitely going
on in my system that needed to be determined.
I had no blood in my stool, a common clue of colon
problems. I had no acute pain. Turns out a CT
scan showed a mass about the size of a tennis ball
in the ascending part of my colon. You would
think large tumor would cause pain to blockage of
bowel movements or give you some signal so you
could do further screening, but I had no such
luck.
The ascending part of the colon is a passive,
quite part of the colon. My primary Dr. said that
even a colonoscopy may not have found this hidden
tumor. By the way, she also failed to have me
take a colonoscopy once I turned 50. This was a
gross oversight which she will never admit.
My point is that you may not have symptoms for
years after the colon cancer tumors can be in you
for years. Regular colon screening is important
and the only hope for early detection.
Unfortunately, the screening is not fool proof,
but it is better than no screening.
I read that one subtle symptom of colon cancer is
that if your bowel movements all of a sudden
change or you feel that you can not quite complete
a bowel movement, get yourself to the Dr's.
I hope this helps. Good luck in your research.
