Title: [MOL] Tamoxifen Preventative Efficacy in Breast Cancer Questioned [13384]
Hi
All,
I am new on MOL. I wrote a few days ago requesting info
about Tamoxifen. I have been reading all of the letters, informative
articles & all of the jokes for the past few days. My first close hand
experience with cancer began last year. My Mother was diagnosed with
Pancreatic Cancer 9/5/97 and she passed away at my home in my arms on
11/3/97. She had been sick with diarrhea for a year and a half, severe
weight loss but no diagnosis. The last doctor was treating her for
depression. She finally collapsed August 25 and was in the hospital for 3
days. I brought her home with me where she stayed until it was over.
When the doctor released her he ordered an ultra sound of the pancreas to be
done 9/3. The tumor was the size of a baseball at that time. With
the help of the wonderful people at Hospice I was able to take care of her and
make her comfortable until it was over for her. It all happened so
fast. I miss her terribly, it's hard to believe it's been almost a
year.
Then this August my 31 year old daughter was diagnosed with
Pagets Disease of the Nipple & Intra-Ductal Carcinoma In Situ. She had
a total mastectomy on Aug. 28. There was no lymph node involvement so she
does not need chemotherapy. The Oncologist has given her the option of
taking Tamoxifen. He wants her to do her own research & decide.
He indicated that he wasn't sure the benefit exceeded the risks, given the type
of cancer she has & her age etc. She is so young, it breaks my heart
to see her go through all of this. It would have been so much easier if it
were me. Anyway any info or suggestions would be helpful. You can
answer through MOL or e-mail me directly GotRocks@msn.classic.com
Thank you in advance. I admire all of your support for
each other.
Sincerely,
Diane

Efficacy in Breast Cancer Questioned [13384]
WESTPORT, Jul 10 (Reuters) - The results of two new
studies published in the July 11th issue of The
Lancet call into question the efficacy of tamoxifen in the prevention
of breast cancer. Dr. U. Veronesi of the European Institute of Oncology
in Milan, and colleagues there and elsewhere in Italy report
preliminary findings from the Italian Tamoxifen Prevention Study showing
that breast cancer rates are not reduced.
HOpe this information benefits
