Good Morning My Friends,
For those that are on chemotherapy and post chemotherapy the following
information is important because this particular blood test is drawn for
specific types of chemotherapy, say TAxol and carboplatin. What the
article does not add though to its information is that the intake of
much water is needed prior, during and post chemo for some period of
time in order to avoid toxicity to the kidneys thereby resulting in a
possible normalcy result to the "creatine and bun" blood tests results.
Just a suggestion and addition to the following message.
I've been wanting to post some information to the Digest regarding
creatine and creatinine for some time now, but sometimes there doesn't
seem to be enough time in the day!
First of all, creatine is a very important biochemical in the body. In
the form of creatine phosphate, it serves as an energy storage chemical
for various biochemical and mechanical actions in the body. Energy is
stored when a phosphate group is attached to creatine, and energy is
liberated (and used by the body) when this high-energy bond is broken
(usually thru an enzymatic process). Current thinking in sports science
is to give athletes additional creatine supplements in order to store
more energy and make them more powerful, etc. The jury is still out on
this one.
Creatinine, on the other hand, is a waste material. It is formed from
creatine by irreversible nonenzymatic dehydration and loss of any
phosphate which may be attached. Eventually, excess creatine is removed
from the body by this biochemical reaction and the creatinine is
measured in blood and urine assays to determine kidney function. Reduced
kidney function leads to a reduced output of creatinine in urine and a
subsequent rise in its levels in blood plasma and serum.
HOpe this information helps provide some educational benefit.
God Bless
marty auslander
