Harnessing "cell suicide" may fight cancer
[08/28/98; Reuters News Service]
NEW YORK, Aug 27 (Reuters) -- A natural process that prompts mutated
or damaged cells to undergo apoptosis -- a type of ''cell suicide''
-- might one day be harnessed to kill cancer cells, suggest the
authors of a report published in the August 28th issue of Science.
When a cell is damaged, it normally undergoes apoptosis and
self-destructs. Cancer cells, however, may fail to self-destruct,
even though they are defective.
But the discovery of ``death receptors'' -- proteins that, when
activated, trigger the process -- suggests that apoptosis may be
used to kill cancer cells, according to the authors of the article,
Drs. Avi Ashkenazi and Vishva M. Dixit, of Genentech Inc. (GNE - news),
San Francisco, California.
