Dear Judy,
I have had two major colon surgeries. The first was an emergency surgery because I was misdiagnosed and by the time they finally believed that I was truly sick I had a bowel obstruction and almost died! The second one was 6 months later to take down the temporary colostomy that I needed after the first surgery. I came through both pretty well. I lost a lot of blood the first time and had to have transfusions but that was because of the obstruction and the size of the tumor. the second sx wasn't bad. I worked with a psychologist and we made a self hypnosis tape for the surgery. It really helped me to relax and made my recovery time quicker. Tell your sister to keep a positive attitude and to keep telling herself that she will heal quickly and easily. I was diagnosed as Stage IV colon cancer in 2-95 and have been cancer free since my second surgery in 9-95.
Good Luck and God bless her. I will add your sister to my prayers.
P.S. I was 45 when I was diagnosed. Everyone (the doctors in two states) said that I was suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. I had a short colon test and a BE in 1993 which were both normal.
