[MOL] Potential biochemical marker of early-stage ovarian cancer

WESTPORT, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Elevated plasma levels of
lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a normal constituent of blood, may
be a marker of gynecologic malignancies, including early-stage
ovarian cancer, according to the results of a preliminary study.
In previous research, Dr. Yan Xu, of the Cleveland Clinic
Foundation, in Ohio, found that certain species of LPA cause
ovarian cancer cells to proliferate in vitro. Using gas
chromatography, Dr. Xu and colleagues then analyzed LPA levels
in women with a variety of malignant and benign diseases.
