VIENNA, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Exercise keeps arteries elastic but
passive smoking has the reverse effect, according to studies
reported at the 20th Congress of the European Society of
Cardiology. Dr. A. Schmidt-Trucksaess, from University Hospital
Freiburg Hugstetter, in Germany, and colleagues have, for the
first time, shown direct evidence of a positive effect of
exercise on artery function. Using tissue Doppler imaging, the
German researchers have shown that men who are more physically
active have better arterial elasticity than their less active
counterparts.
