Hi, Marty and Barb, I guess you missed my long description...a repeat for you.
We just returned from Washington state Olympic National Park where we go
every year It was a bad time to go as the loonie (Canadian dollar coin)
was just over 66c to the US dollar) and went on our usual flower walk...
very hot but we did catch the last of this years flowers. Also visited the
wildlife sanctuary near Port Angeles, Washington (just a short ferry ride
from Victoria). The sanctuary is a spit with a lighthouse on the end (about
6 miles. The interior of the spit is protected and not open to the public
during the nesting session. We love walking the shoreline watching and
hearing the waves roll in and out. We saw a little seal that had just been
born (still had the umbilical cord on). The ranger said it had been born
within the last hour. Dined at one of the National Parks restaurant at
Crescent Lake Lodge and Cathy fell in love with the setting. The grounds
looks a bit seedy but the food is just great. Had some terrific blackberry
pie and we determined to pick our own on our return. We would like to stay
there in one of the little cabins with fireplace one day and row the lake.
We camped and we were able to get in some hammock time.... I love to cloud
watch and watch the big trees. Occasionally, I will ask one of my family to
come over and give me a little swing. Maybe it is so soothing for me as it
reminds of my childhood we usually make a hammock for the babies so that
they are near at hand over the adult bed. I even did this for Cathy and
James found it a bit strange but got used to it. We even tried to catch
some stars up the mountain . People take hikes in the dark on Hurricane
Ridge and it said to be quite worth the extra effort to do it in the
moonlight. The sky was cloudy though when we got there. We did manage to
visit a local spa which has three hot natural hot pools and a cold swimming
pool.
We were back one day and went to the Splash Symphony concert this year...
fabulous. It is a fund raiser for the Victoria Symphony and it is staged on
a barge in the inner harbour of Victoria. I went down with two chairs and
reserved my place at 5 pm. The crowd around was very friendly and we had a
terrific time. Very special with the clear day, the parliament buildings
behind and the Empress Railway Hotel on one side and the harbour view of
boats and one tall ship and all the people, the usual estimate of 40,000.
It was so noisy I had trouble hearing the clarion bells and the canons and
fireworks at the end of the 1812 Overture. Cathy sat on the lower causeway
with friends. A couple of them had gone down at 9 AM to reserve a place.
The liked the idea of watching the day unfold on the waterfront. Vancouver
Island and Victoria (11 pages, August issue) made the Conde Nast Traveler
Magazine this year. Good free advertising and we are getting a lot of
Americans this year due to the falling loonie. Returned to a very lush
allotment garden, squash, zucchini, swiss chard, beans, potatoes, tomatoes
mostly. You really notice the difference by being away for a bit. We
thought we were doing well until we saw this couple (looked Italian) that
had a huge bucket of BIG beautifully ripe tomatoes. Remarked that they must
eat a lot of pasta and they just beamed! We did pick wild blackberries and
have some really delicious blackberry pies (one made with wholewheat flour
1 to 1 with white flour and honey and shortening and corn starch. Simple
but it was delicious. Jim made some tarts and took them to work. The hot
weather continues and the fire forest fires are really bad this year in the
interior.
Good wishes and prayers for your continued good health, Barb. God Bless,
Jeanne
