Good Morning My FRiends,
GENERAL INFORMATION
TORONTO, August 4 /CNW-PRN/ - Skye PharmaTech Inc. today announced that
it has developed what it believes to be the world's first rapid test to
assist in the diagnosis of stroke.
Skye scientists have developed a rapid immunoassay to measure a
biochemical marker S-100, which is a calcium binding protein found in
the brain. Research has shown that levels of S-100 are elevated early
in cerebral infarctions.
When challenged in making a diagnosis today, physicians must rely on
symptoms, patient history and CATscans,'' said Ram Vairavan, Vice
President at Skye. ``However CAT Scans are normal in 80% of the
patients and can take up to 2 to 3 days to turn abnormal. The use of
biochemical markers like S-100 will greatly assist physicians in
determining if a stroke has occurred and enable the administration of
therapeutics within the three hour window to minimize damage to the
brain.''
Stroke is one of the most common causes of death in the Western
countries. Also known as the Brain Attack it strikes an estimated
600,000 people every year in North America. As a result, 3 million
Americans and 50,000 Canadians are permanently disabled. Brain Attack
is caused by an occlusion of a blood vessel in the brain. If not
diagnosed within a three hour window, from the onset of symptoms, it
may lead to loss in speech, memory, paralysis and possibly death. Hence
the key to successful therapy is the rapid diagnosis of the disease
from the onset of symptoms.
Pre-clinical data supports our findings that our S-100 test is
sensitive to diagnose brain attack as the S-100 protein is elevated at
the time of presentation while CT scans were still normal'' said Dr.
George Jackowski, Chief Scientific Officer of Skye. The Skye test can
be used with serum and test results can be obtained within 30 minutes.
Skye PharmaTech Inc. common shares and purchase warrants currently
trade on the Canadian Dealing Network (``CDN'') under the symbols
``SKYE'' and ``SKYE.WT''. There are currently 3,389,566 shares and
3,389,566 warrants issued and outstanding.
