Re: [MOL] A New Year Filled with Health, Peace and Happiness

I told a friend the other day that 1998 was going to be our best year ever,
and she looked at me like I was nuts!

In October of this year I lost my mother after a long battle with Lupus. It
was very hard on all of us, especially me and my Dad. I was a long distance
caregiver and my Dad was losing his college sweetheart (he's 70).

We were so worried about how he would fare afterwards, being by himself and
having been very reliant on my Mother. He spent Thanksgiving with us here
in Houston, which was when Charlie's tumor was first discovered (ironically,
just what I wanted him to forget were hospitals and illness after the loss
of my Mom).

I kept telling him that I was so glad he was here to be my moral support.
He really does not understand that just the presence of someone who loves
you is so important. I know he feels he has somehow failed my Mother. Just
the opposite is true. I couldn't have asked God for a better caregiver for
her. I have so much to learn from his dedication and patience.

So 1997 was not a stellar year, but I expect 1998 to bring me closer to my
loved ones, my friends, my self.

Now who's the windbag???

PS Thanks for the "cocktail" recipe. Our dog had lymphoma and entered into
some Veterinary clinical studies at MD Anderson through Gulf Coast Vet.
Specialists, so Reglan definitely rings a bell as does Benadryl (I probably
have little bottles of it around here somewhere).

He outlived the initial prognosis by more than double, and the doctors
always attributed it to his personality (he was a scrappy fox terrier who
was smart as a whip). There were several points when we pursued very strong
doses of vincristine, vinblastine, taxol (I think), and we were warned that
BIG dogs had not been able to withstand them. He became known as the
EverReady Bunny, and the doctors all said that they had learned from him to
take personality into account when deciding how much and animal could take.

We had him put to sleep when his quality of life began to suffer (an
agreement we made with the Vet Onc before even beginning treatment)
