9-01-95 My wife Michelle, age 34, was 16 weeks pregnant when an MRI ordered
because of severe back pain disclosed full blown metastasis to the thorasic
spine of breast cancer which had been treated by masectomy and adjevant
chemotherapy 3yrs earlier. She was given the strong recommendation to
immediately abort and begin radiation and chemotherapy immediately.
She
refused abortion.
A plan of radiation therapy minimizing exposure to the baby was developed and
implemented.
Further scans discovered metastasis to the brain, lungs and liver. Radiation
to the brain next. 1 treatment of TAXOL 175mg/m2 and morphine from day of
diagnosis 9-01-95.
Baby Jessica was delivered 10-24-95 @ 24 weeks to the day gestation, 16 weeks
premature @ 1lb 3 1/2oz.
Baby Jess got a rough start. Morphine dependent, severely underweight, nearly
nonexistant lungs needed respirator for months. Jessica came home 3-15-96.
She is now 2 yrs old, not just doing well but a very bright child
developmentally on track not just for her corrected age but for her actual
birth age.
Mother is still fighting cancer but taking care of baby. Not bad when
oncologist gave Michelle 1yr max survival if baby were aborted immediately
9-1-95. I think the baby keeps Michelle alive. Jessica gives Michelle the
strength she needs for every chemo treatment she receives and every new
procedure she must endure.
