Dear Jeanne,
The greatest source of information about support groups and treatments
and caregiving comes from those parents who have children going through
treatments at Boston Childrens HOspital. In other words you may wish to
speak to some of the MOthers and Fathers who have children admitted or
are receiving treatment or received treatment at the hospital and also
the hospital itself has a book or guidelines on various support groups.
I would also suggest you call the American Cancer Society, locally, as
they list a number of children support groups and comprehensive
hospitals for 2nd opinions.
Jeanne, if its any consolation, when anyone receives cancer or major
disease, even though the battle will be long, you will find that along
the way many positive events and experiences come as a result of the
struggle and in many cases, we become more self reliant, stronger in
will and perseverence and the child generally grows up to be healthy,
more determined for quality life. HOw do I know? WEll we all here, and
others in various cancer discussion groups, are and have experienced
this battle and while it is long and we have accepted the fact that it
will be ongoing for the rest of our lives, even though one may be cancer
free, that the lifestyles, emotionally and physically, can be
assimilated to one of wellness so that we don't look at it as though its
a long battle, but rather one that is necessary to be more knowledgable
so that our loved ones and the loved ones we meet along the way will
benefit from our determination. HOpe I am making myself clear and this
is somewhat comforting. In other words we can make this more postive
than feeling that it is getting to us.
My best to the family and I pray for the childs recovery.
