Re: Mom In Hospital With Low White Counts - Need Information On Colony
Stimulating Factors For CML (Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia)

I had to take my mom to the hospital this morning after she
developed a fever from a cold she has had since Thursday.
Her white cells were too low and she had to be placed in an
isolation unit and is being given intravenous antibiotics. Her
white count has fallen down to 1400 and it had been in the normal
range in the 1 1/2 years since she was diagnosed with CML
with the exception of one previous occasion when it fell down
to around 1000 and she had to stop taking Interferon for about
7 days. At that time she was not hospitalized and just stayed in
her room mostly for about a week until the blood counts returned
to normal. The difference this time is that she has a cold and has
now developed a fever but she so far has not really felt too badly
and was doing all of her normal things until today. Her most recent bone
marrow test last month was 100% clear which apparently means the Interferon
has brought about a cytogenic remission. With the
exception of the other time that she had low white counts, she has
never felt bad at all from having CML or from taking Inteferon and
has not had any noticable side effects from Interferon.

I wanted to ask if anyone with CML has had any experience with using any of
the colony stimulating factors to stimulate the production of white
cells while using Interferon. Based on some of what I have read in
briefly looking this afternoon, there are certain types of diseases where
the colony stimulating factors cannot be used and I am trying to figure
out if they are ever used for CML patients with low white cell counts.
