Re: [MOL] post chemo and during radiation therapy diet

Dear Hugh and Judy,

So sorry to hear about your difficulties. I don't have much to offer save
the couple of following observations.

Soy milk. Actually law prevents its being sold as such, but it is available
as "soy beverage". I had heard about it, and actually tasted it without much
enthusiasm, but didn't actually begin using it until I got leukemia and was
looking around for nutritious, easy to eat food. Ensure is for me automatic
diarrhea. I might must as well drink it sitting on the john. I am the same
way with milk. (Though, praise be, not cream or cheese.) I have none of this
with soy milk products, which I drink with confidence. No doubt all brands
are equally effective, but one is (at least round here in New York) easy to
find, so it's the one I use. Edensoy. You can get it plain or fortified with
beta carotene, vitamins B-12, E, D and calcium. I have come to find it
delicious. I consume it with relish. And I think it makes a definite
difference in the way you feel. Soy is a marvelous food, and apart from the
"beverage" I suggest you look into soy in general. It assumes whatever flavor
you mix it with. By the way my inclination to use soy gained huge momentum
when I read it helps build up the immune system. I drink quite large amounts
every day.

Another tiny discovery of mine is red raspberry leaves. I don't know if the
herb is available in liquid form, but you can get it in health food stores in
capsules, and the powder therein could be whipped into anything. I first
heard of its use in connection with AIDS, in which diarrhea is a big factor.
In my experience, a few capsules in the morning can be quite effective, and I
would experiment with more if necessary.

As for the nausea, the pill I had during my chemotherapy seemed to work
wonders. My doctor is away for a few more days, but when I next speak to him
I will ask what they give me (I go back in late next week, most probably),
and I'll let you know.

Hope this is of some help. I wish you increasing light and comfort and
confidence that your difficulties will soon be over.

God bless.

-- Ron
