> ------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Care Giver and Husband of 35 Years:
I am a head & neck cancer survivor who underwent oral surgery followed by
37 treatments of Radiation. The Radiation treatment was alot more
disabling than I was led to believe. My appitite went, I was always
tired and weak and eventually, my mouth got so burned, I couldn't
swallow. I used alot of Ensure to maintain my weight and neutritional
input. I was fortunate to have advice from the dietary department of
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. They calculated the number of
cans of Ensure per day for my age and weight. You may want to try
connecting with a dietition at your local hospital or medical center.
It is VERY important that your Judy take sufficient fluids. My wife
almost forced me to drink the Ensure at times when all I wanted to do was
sleep. I eventually got dehydrated to the point that they would hook me
up to an IV when I went for Radiation treatment. I was eventually
admitted for four days due to dehydration and had a feeding tube
inserted. This is when I started on the Ensure and eventually took it by
mouth after I had healed a bit.
Try anything that she liked before the treatments started...ice cream,
yogart, pudding, fruit, malteds, ice cream sodas...be creative. A
blender is an essential tool in the creative process (I've had a dinner
of ham, potatoes and carrots...all blended!). Experiment and keep
trying. Remember, you are not alone...there's alot of help and
encouragement for you on this website.
God Bless,
John Lehner
